Wireless Router advice
« on: Mar10-2010, 05:23:44 »
gotta make this post quick...getting ready to watch Pandorum with the little lady.

I need a new router, something with major range.  All of our devices are class G, so getting N cards is a no go...let's just get that out of the way.

I need something that provides MUCH  more range.   personally, i like Belkin, buy them by choice.  I currently have a Belkin F5D7234-4 v1 Wireless Router.  It works great, but as I said, I need more range.

Any suggestions?

Try a range extender and keep the existing router!!

Belkin F5D7132 Wireless-G Universal Range Extender - should be around $40 on Amazon

Its more of a repeater/access point in the LAN landscape, but should give a great deal more range... or grab the neighbors unsecured wireless network... been there done that ... lol

cool deal, SSgt...  I've been looking for a decent repeater, just haven't dug one up.

I dug this one up:

The cool thing about it is we can hook up our 1TB external HDD and share that puppy.   I'm not paying for it, so not a big deal to my wallet, directly anyway.

What did you think of it?

(Is this thread hijacking if it is actually related to something from the original post?)

I recently bought a Belkin N-150 wireless router... and have been having major issues with it since the day it went in.

every day it does at least one of the following... sometimes multiple:

* Lose connection to the Cable modem
* Stop broadcasting the wireless SSID
* Stop allowing traffic to the internet via one of the wired ports
* Stop allowing traffic to the internet via one of the wireless connections

I heard from one person that power fluctuations can cause issues like this... but I'm wondering if I just got a fucked router...

On top of this my internet speeds are crashing from 7-10MB to 1.5-3.5MB just about every evening between 6pm and 10pm... it's been a blast, I tell ya .. just a blast.

That's what I get for buying a router off the shelf... reading the 2 and 1 star reviews of the 150N Belkini router on Amazon .... which is about half the total reviews.... all reporting the same issues I got..

OK .. fuck Belkin in the ass... LinkSys can suck my balls too for the issues I've had with the last two routers...

Netgear or D-Link?

The poor man's range fix is just to place your router higher up, like on top of a tall bookshelf or something.  It won't add huge differences, but you should get a few extra yards of range.

personally, I dig the belkin routers I've had over the years.    One may ask why I've had to have several, if they are so great.   Moving, giving them away, loaning, etc...various reasons.   They have all worked great, extremely easy to set up, and have always been much smaller than any of the lynksis's I've owned.

I have a Linksys router and at least once a day I have to re-set it to get back online - I am looking for another so I am also open to ideas.

I use a couple of linksys wrt54-g routers, with a custom firmware dd-wrt.  In the router after the firmware change its a matter of bumping up the tx and rx values a little.. various tweaking guides on the net.

otherwise, if its just range you want then head to http://www.instructables.net and lookup wifi antennas... many homebrew type solutions.. many with tin foil and if you hit the comments below the projects there are some seriously smart cats that post with lots of technical data.

i have also seen many routers and things at thrift stores (running a router and modem from one right now), mostly without power supplies... but they usually have tons of those too for other things.. just match up the numbers and see if the plugs fit.  amazing what you can get for less than 10$ at those places.

Speaking of DD-WRT, it reminded me that I just bought a pair of these: ASUS WL-500g Premium V2

I got them with the intention of putting the full DD-WRT build on them and setting up a VPN between home and office but I haven't gotten around to that yet. They have huge amounts of memory if you want to be able to play around with all the DD-WRT (or Open WRT) hacking...

D-Link DIR-655 This is what I use. I've had zero problems with it in the 2 years(?) I've had it.

I'll let all ya'll know how it is.    The external HDD sharing is just too damn nifty a feature, I tell ya.
