PATTON"S TEN COMMANDMENTS

Do everything that you ask of those you command.
Say what you mean, and mean what you say.
Do not fear failure.
Do more than is required of you.
Do not take counsel of your fears.
Always go forward.
Take calculated risks.
Give credit where it is due.
Accept full responsibility for the actions of yourself        and your men.

“There are no self-proclaimed villains, only regiments of self-proclaimed saints. Victorious historians rule where good or evil lies. We abjure labels. We fight for money and an indefinable pride. Bast's sig roughly translated:

Quae not is today tomorrow little fitted will be : Not to them but suis : Upon pace , when wise aptarit proper to wage war Age. Fac when to rejoice : After warrior to send forward : Ear tender wolf : Voyage necessary is : Quae too much from probo-are , nothing from probo-are : Crossing shade lux to stay to the end :

Abremylin's meager rewrite for english speakers:

Tomorrow will be little fitted to what is not today;  Not to them but to US; Wise find the right time to wage war; Know when to rejoice; After your champion, go forward; tender wolf ear; Travel is necessary;  What is too much from the "probo-are", nothing from the "probo-are"; Crossing the shade of the light is to stay until the end.

Good effort. :)

Rough translations... The intention is the real meat as with any translation.

Qui nimium probat, nihil probat : One who proves too much, proves nothing
Qui non est hodie cras minus aptus erit : He who is not prepared today will be less so tomorrow. (Ovid)
Non sibi sed suis : Not for one's self but for one's people
In pace, ut sapiens, aptarit idonea bello : In peace, like a wise man, he appropriately prepares for war
Age. Fac ut gaudeam : Go ahead. Make my day!
Post proelia praemia : After the battles come the rewards
Auribus tenere lupum : I am holding the wolf by the ears
Navigare necesse est : Sailing/Navigation is necessary.
Transit umbra, lux permanet : Shadow Passes, Light Remains

10 Principles of Leadership

1. Know your job – Know what you are talking about, learn and understand the principles and problems entailed in the work of your soldiers so that you can be sure that they are doing their job properly.

2. Know your own strengths and limitations and pursue self improvement – You can seek self improvement by discussion with experienced personnel, by reading regulations, and by being enthusiastic and striving to do the best you can.

3. Seek and accept responsibility – One of the most important characteristics of a good leader is the ability to accept challenges with confidence and enthusiasm. To do this, a soldier who aspires to leadership must develop a sound mental attitude. This attitude should be characterized by a lively interest, an avid curiousity and a determination to strive for higher personal achievement. Some ways in which you can go about developing responsibilities among your troops are:

- Encourage them to attain qualifications for promotion.
- Give senior people responsibilities and authority to carry them out.
- Develop pride in the unit and the soldiers

4. Set an example – As learned earlier.

5. Make sure your soldiers know your meaning and intent, and then lead them to the accomplishment of the task – Communicate ideas and thoughts clearly.

6. Know your soldiers and promote their welfare – Get to know what your soldiers’ capabilities are, their weaknesses and their strengths. The NCO must get to know a little bit of personal information about each cadet of whom they are in charge. The following list is minimum of the information that should be obtained:

- Full name and pronunciation
- What part of town the soldier lives in
- Anyone who is friends with the soldier
- Any hobbies the soldier might have
Looking after the welfare of the soldiers in your charge is an important duty. The troops’ needs must be considered first in all decisions. Ensuring they line up at the mess hall ahead of your or ensuring that their requests to speak to their Platoon Commander or Commanding Officer are looked after immediately. Remember to be a friend but never a pal

7. Develop the leadership potential of your soldiers– In making the effort to pass on the lessons that you have learned in leadership, the effectiveness of your unit will increase. This will make your job all the easier in the end.

8. Make sound and timely decisions – How do you go about making a difficult decision that affects the welfare of the soldiers of your section, or platoon? This can be accomplished by discussing matters with experienced personnel and using problem solving skills to make a decision and sticking to it. Avoid a hasty ill-conceived decision and do not put off necessary decisions.

9. Train your soldiers to work together as a team and employ them to their full potential – By multiplying your own efforts through the building of a team or staff will lead to success. In this way, the leader can accomplish more in a shorter period. A good team spirit also helps to make the work more interesting for everyone. Leaders must ensure that the supervisor distributes the workload to the division equitably and in a way that best uses the capabilities of the team. Ensure soldiers receive the encouragement and necessary guidance. The efficient use of your team depends upon the leader knowing the troops and planning. Ensure a person is doing a task within his or her capabilities by making sure they are qualified for the task, and if necessary, by training them for the job.

10. Keep your soldiers informed – The leader can contribute to improving the morale of the unit by ensuring that the troops are well informed of what is going on. Explain reasons for changes (when known) and hold talks to relieve the tension. Never lie to your soldiers.

- There is a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path.

This is how leadership is seen in the Can Army..  hope you like this.. :soldierslive:

My favourite, and perhaps most misunderstood, quote by Yamamoto Tsunemoto as written in what I think to be the most clearly written book on thr ideals of the Samurai:

The Way of the Samurai is found in death. When it comes to either/or, there is only the quick choice of death. It is not particularly difficult. Be determined and advance. To say that dying without reaching one's aim is to die a dog's death is the frivolous way of sophisticates. When pressed with the choice of life or death, it is not necessary to gain one's aim.

A warrior should be careful in all things and should dislike to be the least bit worsted. Above all, if he is not careful in his choice of words he may say things like, "I'm a coward," or "At that time I'd probably run," or "How frightening," or "How painful." These are words that should not be said even in jest, on a whim, or when talking in one's sleep. If a person with understanding hears such things, he will see to the bottom of the speaker's heart. This is something that should be carefully thought about beforehand.

We are looking for a very specific, rare type of person, one who is ready to commit themselves to a degree which most cannot fathom. We take our Company, our gaming, our time spent here, seriously. We take it seriously because this is our Fun; this is where we spend our off-time, away from the real world in order to relieve stress, not create it. Understand that while we use the word "seriously", it does not denote "life and death" seriousness. It simply means we put a great deal of work into making this the best place to play. We don't want impatient, immature slackers who think about nothing but themselves. We want those who can believe in the team by way of a method of operation which gives it value inherent to its meaning.

I am here by My own Choosing.  My only Discharge shall be through Death.

I will keep my weapons honed and apply my skills in service Of, By and For the Company.

The Annals and Charter are my Guides, both in letter and spirit.

I will follow the Chain of Command and My Orders, taking no actions that violate My Oath or any Contract into which the Company has entered.

No Excuses.

As usual, Matty, I have no earthly clue what you are saying.

The motivation part of Ice T's quote is in that he's willing to look far beyond the hoopla of nationalism and the All Mightyness of the Founding Fathers ( for whom I do indeed have a great deal of respect, which is to say, a few of them for a few reasons, but certainly not all of them for all reasons) and point out their blatant hypocrisy.   There IS nothing motivational about owning slaves, that's the entire point.  This is America, Land of the Free...unless you were Black, Native American, Chinese, Irish, etc etc...anything other than a White Man.   So when people talk about how damn great the Constitution is, we are best served by remembering well who it was designed to best serve.

In one's life. there are levels in the pursuit of study. In the lowest level, a person studies but nothing comes of it, and he feels that both he and others are unskillful. At this point he is worthless. In the middle level he is still useless but is aware of his own insufficiencies and can also see the insufficiencies of others. In a higher level he has pride concerning his own ability, rejoices in praise from others, and laments the lack of ability in his fellows. This man has worth. In the highest level a man has the look of knowing nothing .

These are the levels in general;. But there is one transcending level, and this is the most excellent of all. This person is aware of the endlessness of entering deeply into a certain Way arid never thinks of himself as having finished. He truly knows his own insufficiencies and never in his whole life thinks that he has succeeded. He has no thoughts of pride but with self-abasement knows the Way to the end. It is said that Master Yagyu once remarked, "I do not know the way to defeat others, but the way to defeat myself. ''

Presumably it can be said that a man who has been cut down was lacking in ability and had run out of luck as a warrior. The man who cut him down, compelled by unavoidable circumstances and feeling that there was nothing else to be done, also put his life on the line, and thus there should be no evidence of cowardice. Being short-tempered is inappropriate, but it cannot be said that two men who face each other are cowards. In this recent event, however, the men who lived and covered themselves with shame were not true warriors .

"You can't break a man the way you break a dog, or a horse. The harder you beat a man, the taller he stands. To break a man's will, to break his spirit, you have to break his mind. Men have this idea that we can fight with dignity; that there's a proper way to kill someone. It's absurd, it's inaesthetic. We need to endure the bloody horror of murder. You must destroy that idea. Show them what a messy, terrible thing it is to kill a man, and then show them that you relish in it. Shoot the wound, then execute the wounded; burn them, take them in close combat, destroy their preconceptions of what a man is, and you become their personal monster. When they fear you, you become stronger, you become better. But let's never forget, it's a display, it's a posture, like a lion's roar or a gorilla thumping his chest. If you lose yourself with display, if you succumb to the horror, then you become the monster. You become reduced. Not more than a man, but less; and it can be fatal."

But then you got your assholes, Chuck. And all the assholes want us to shit all over everything! So, pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes, Chuck. And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in shit! "

The variation:

"Gary: We're dicks! We're reckless, arrogant, stupid dicks. And the Film Actors Guild are pussies. And Kim Jong Il is an asshole. Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes: assholes who just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate — and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of shit that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us fuck this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shit!"

You want to know what's sick? I'll tell you what's sick. People in the UK, US, fuckin' Canada, Sweden. They pay their taxes and some remote piloted drone fires a missile into a public market to hit some warlord. Yeah so maybe war doesn’t happen for another six months, and the price of their gluten-free bread stays low. It’s not sick to arm people. It’s sick to bump off their crooks and dictators in our protection and then call it 'international justice.' These people don’t have remote piloted drones guarding their interests ten thousand miles away, they don’t have a war machine paid for with taxes. The drone is the oppressor, the gluten-free bread is the oppressor, the AK-47 is the great equalizer.

What do you think you’re gonna achieve with this? You think somebody is gonna read it and come after me? Fuck no, I’m a necessary evil. They want me here, they’re glad I’m here. Because if I wasn’t, they might have to come try to stem the tide, it would be thankless and worthless, and once the bodies started coming home in bags, they’re screwed. A dead twenty-three year old from Iowa gets more airtime than the death of fifty-thousand people he gave his life to protect. So even if they did give a shit, their own media prevents them from taking action.

"Look at these classy ass little shits shouting out in support of whatever propaganda, lies, and bullshit being spouted at them. It’s absurd. These guys are already dead; they’ve blown each other away for someone else. There’s no popular resistance, no liberty and labour. There’s no ideology at all. There isn’t even a desire to win. There’s no sense in it, no sense in it at all. What would it matter if we butchered the lot of them? Would it change anything?

If you have to kill someone, if you have to, is it somehow better to do it clean with a bullet through the head? Is it somehow worse to chop them up with an axe? What if you have to kill ten, or a hundred, or a thousand? What if in doing it you save a thousand, or you spare ten? What if you save yourself? What is the measure of a man, or his murder? By what insane calculus can we answer questions like these? Should we even try?"

Bit long to be quoted, but still:

A Definition of a Gentleman

by John Henry Newman

It is almost a definition of a gentleman to say he is one who never inflicts pain. This description is both refined and, as far as it goes, accurate. He is mainly occupied in merely removing the obstacles which hinder the free and unembarrassed action of those about him; and he concurs with their movements rather than takes the initiative himself. His benefits may be considered as parallel to what are called comforts or conveniences in arrangements of a personal nature: like an easy chair or a good fire, which do their part in dispelling cold and fatigue, though nature provides both means of rest and animal heat without them. The true gentleman in like manner carefully avoids whatever may cause a jar or a jolt in the minds of those with whom he is cast;--all clashing of opinion, or collision of feeling, all restraint, or suspicion, or gloom, or resentment; his great concern being to make every one at their ease and at home. He has his eyes on all his company; he is tender towards the bashful, gentle towards the distant, and merciful towards the absurd; he can recollect to whom he is speaking; he guards against unseasonable allusions, or topics which may irritate; he is seldom prominent in conversation, and never wearisome. He makes light of favours while he does them, and seems to be receiving when he is conferring. He never speaks of himself except when compelled, never defends himself by a mere retort, he has no ears for slander or gossip, is scrupulous in imputing motives to those who interfere with him, and interprets every thing for the best. He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp sayings for arguments, or insinuates evil which he dare not say out. From a long-sighted prudence, he observes the maxim of the ancient sage, that we should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend. He has too much good sense to be affronted at insults, he is too well employed to remember injuries, and too indolent to bear malice. He is patient, forbearing, and resigned, on philosophical principles; he submits to pain, because it is inevitable, to bereavement, because it is irreparable, and to death, because it is his destiny. If he engages in controversy of any kind, his disciplined intellect preserves him from the blundering discourtesy of better, perhaps, but less educated minds; who, like blunt weapons, tear and hack instead of cutting clean, who mistake the point in argument, waste their strength on trifles, misconceive their adversary, and leave the question more involved than they find it. He may be right or wrong in his opinion, but he is too clear-headed to be unjust; he is as simple as he is forcible, and as brief as he is decisive. Nowhere shall we find greater candour, consideration, indulgence: he throws himself into the minds of his opponents, he accounts for their mistakes. He knows the weakness of human reason as well as its strength, its province and its limits. If he be an unbeliever, he will be too profound and large-minded to ridicule religion or to act against it; he is too wise to be a dogmatist or fanatic in his infidelity. He respects piety and devotion; he even supports institutions as venerable, beautiful, or useful, to which he does not assent; he honours the ministers of religion, and it contents him to decline its mysteries without assailing or denouncing them. He is a friend of religious toleration, and that, not only because his philosophy has taught him to look on all forms of faith with an impartial eye, but also from the gentleness and effeminacy of feeling, which is the attendant on civilization.

Not that he may not hold a religion too, in his own way, even when he is not a Christian. In that case his religion is one of imagination and sentiment; it is the embodiment of those ideas of the sublime, majestic, and beautiful, without which there can be no large philosophy. Sometimes he acknowledges the being of God, sometimes he invests an unknown principle or quality with the attributes of perfection. And this deduction of his reason, or creation of his fancy, he makes the occasion of such excellent thoughts, and the starting-point of so varied and systematic a teaching, that he even seems like a disciple of Christianity itself. From the very accuracy and steadiness of his logical powers, he is able to see what sentiments are consistent in those who hold any religious doctrine at all, and he appears to others to feel and to hold a whole circle of theological truths, which exist in his mind no otherwise than as a number of deductions.

Time is an asset as real as any physical object or abstract concept such as modern currency.  We have a finite amount of it, therefor should treat it as the absolute most valuable currency we each possess.  Currency should not be squandered nor given away for the gain of others after we have worked so hard to chisel out each unit, bead of sweat by drop of blood by grunt and groan.  In order to make the most of our currency, regardless of its form, we are required to invest it in ways which provide a greater return than its original worth.  Simply put, the time we spend doing any activity in life should be considered an investment, not an expenditure. -   J.K.D.

The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries

The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries[15] is a popular handbook in the Schlock Mercenary universe.
This book was originally called The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates,[16][17][18] a parody of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, but after Tayler received a cease and desist letter from FranklinCovey, he made the retcon on January 24, 2011. Tayler said that the letter "was worded as nicely as such a thing can be".[19]
The book's maxims are often quoted by Tagon, as well as other characters. The following is a list of the maxims found in Schlock Mercenary, ordered by maxim number. The date given after each maxim is the date it first appeared in the strip.

Bene Gesserit

Litany against fear:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain

Quote
Writers who wish to impart to their productions power and pungency, who wish to keep the reader's attention upon the tiptoe of activity, who desire to escape the imputation of pedantry and who seek to surcharge their sentiments with sparkle and spirit, will do well to bear in mind constantly that long, lingering sentences, unduly overburdened with an abundance of phrases, clauses, and parenthetical observations of a more or less digressive character, are apt to be tiresome to the reader, especially if the subject matter be at all profound or ponderous, to place an undue strain upon his powers of concentration and to leave him with a confused concept of the ideas which the writer apparently has been at great pains to concentrate, while short, snappy sentences, on the other hand, with the frequent recurrence of subject and predicate, thus recalling and emphasizing the idea to be expressed as the development of the thought proceeds, like numerous sign-posts upon an untraveled road, these frequent breaks having the effect of taking a new hold upon the reader's attention, oases in the desert of words, as it were, will be found to be much more effective, much more conductive to clarity, and far better calculated to preserve the contact, the wireless connection, so to speak, between the writer and the reader, provided, however, and it is always very easy to err through a too strict and too literal application of a general rule, that the sentences are not so short as to give a jerky, choppy, and sketchy effect and to scatter the reader's attention so often as to send him wool-gathering completely.

"You also need to look back, not just at the people who are running behind you but especially at those who don't run and never will... those who run but don't race...those who started training for a race but didn't carry through...those who got to the starting line but didn't in the finish line...those who once raced better than you but no longer run at all. You're still here. Take pride in wherever you finish. Look at all the people you've outlasted."
- Joe Henderson

"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run."

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."  - Siddhartha Gautama
